Sharon Kleyne called her listeners’ attention to an article making the social media rounds that appeared on December 12th. In the article, the writer declared that the health advice to drink at least eight glasses of water each day is not actually true. The author, a doctor, claimed that the eight glasses a day recommendation “is a myth.”
“This is exactly the kind of information,” said Sharon Kleyne, “that can harm peoples’ health. This writer is evidently unaware of the fact that libraries worth of science uphold the eight-glasses-a day routine for people young and old. Even worse,” Kleyne pointed out, “is the article’s attempt to sound scientifically legitimate.” This is in spite of the fact that while actually describing eight glasses of water a day as “the original fake medical news.”

Sharon Kleyne said that readers (and listeners) ought to question what they read and hear and fact check what people say. “If you take the time to do a little research,” said Kleyne, “you can find out whether or not someone’s claim is true or false.” Kleyne complained that it’s not just health that is under attack. Articles that contain fake news can also damage good products and businesses. “This ‘news’ story that attacks the practice of drinking eight glasses of water a day,” said Kleyne, “is a perfect example of someone speaking about water who has not studied evaporation.” Kleyne called for more education about the impact fake news is having in our everyday lives, and regardless of the season, Kleyne and her research team says that you must drink 8 to 10 glasses of fresh water every day to supplement your body water vapor. “Increase to 10 to 12 glasses if coming down with a cold or flu,” Kleyne told her audience. “Consume the water in full glasses rather than sipping.
